Do Queenslanders Really Win All the Prize Homes? We Checked the Last 60 Winners

It's the comment that turns up under nearly every winner announcement. So we went through the official results for the last 15 prize homes from each of the four big charities and mapped where every winner lives. The answer is more surprising, and a lot more fun, than you'd think.

Post a prize home on social media and you can set your watch by it. Somewhere in the comments, usually within the first hour, someone writes: hopefully someone from outside Queensland wins this one, because it always seems to be a Queenslander. It's said with a grin, mostly. But behind it is a question plenty of people quietly wonder about. If you live in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, are you wasting your time?

We decided to stop guessing and count. We took the last 15 prize home winners from each of the four charities we cover: Dream Home Art Union (the RSL Art Union), Mater, Endeavour and Yourtown. That's 60 draws, from June 2024 to October 2026, and we checked every winner's home town against the charity's own published results.

The verdict: Queensland doesn't win most of them

Of the 60 winners, 26 live in Queensland and 34 live somewhere else. New South Wales alone won 19.

So "it's always Queensland" isn't right. It isn't completely wrong either, and this is where it gets interesting. The fair test is to line up each state's share of the winners against its share of the people.

New South Wales is home to 31% of Australians and won 32% of these prize homes, almost a perfect match. Tasmania and the ACT land right on their share too. Queensland, with about one in five Australians, won about two in five homes, while Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia won less than their share. Is the draw tilted? No, and the real reason makes complete sense once you see it.

The barrel has no idea whether a ticket was bought in Brisbane or Bunbury. Why the draw can't favour any state

Why it feels like Queensland always wins

Winners follow tickets. Every ticket is one entry with exactly the same chance as every other, so the winners end up spread across the country roughly the way the tickets are. A state that buys more tickets will win more homes.

And Queenslanders probably buy a lot of them. All four charities are Queensland-based, and almost every prize home sits on the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast. For a Queenslander, it's a home you could drive past on a Sunday, and in some draws you can walk through it. It's much easier to get excited about a house that's an hour up the road. As far as we can find, the charities don't publish ticket sales by state, so we can't put a number on it, but the pattern in the winners is exactly what you'd expect if Queenslanders are their biggest supporters.

Streaks feel like proof, but they're normal. Toss a coin twenty times and you're more likely than not to see the same side come up four or more times in a row. Real randomness is lumpy, and our brains are brilliant at spotting patterns in it. You'll see a perfect example in Endeavour's results below.

We remember the stories closest to home. A Brisbane family winning a Gold Coast mansion makes the local news and gets talked about at the footy and in the school car park. A winner in Geelong or Urunga is just as real, but you're far less likely to hear about it if you live in Queensland. The reverse is true in Victoria, which is probably why both sides of the border think the other one wins everything.

Charity by charity

Dream Home Art Union Draw 424 prize home in Freshwater, Sydney

Dream Home Art Union

10 of 15 outside Queensland

The most interstate-friendly of the four, and the one where New South Wales actually beats Queensland, six winners to five. Victoria has three and the ACT one. Pictured is Draw 424, a home in Freshwater on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Its winner? A ticket holder from Brisbane. The Riverwood winner of Draw 434 is the woman who hung up on the call because she was sure it was a scam.

Mater Draw 324 prize home at Burleigh Waters, lit up at night

Mater

9 of 15 in Queensland

The most Queensland of the four, which fits. Mater is the name behind one of Brisbane's best-known hospitals, and plenty of Queensland families have a Mater baby or two. Most winners live around Brisbane, in Coorparoo, Tarragindi, Everton Park and Alexandra Hills. Even so, Victoria won four and NSW two, including Draw 324 at Burleigh Waters (pictured), which went to Langwarrin in Melbourne's south-east.

Endeavour Draw 465 prize home in Maleny, Sunshine Coast hinterland

Endeavour

8 of 15 outside Queensland

Here's that streak. Six of Endeavour's last seven winners live in Queensland, yet seven of the eight before them lived interstate. Endeavour is also the only one of the four to send a home to Western Australia in this period, twice. Its NSW winners include Ashfield, Padstow Heights, Kingsford and Swansea, whose winner took home Draw 465 in Maleny (pictured).

Yourtown Draw 551 prize home at Mermaid Waters, Gold Coast

Yourtown

10 of 15 outside Queensland

The widest spread of all: five states, including the only winners from South Australia and Tasmania in our list. NSW and Queensland have five each and Victoria three. Draw 551 at Mermaid Waters (pictured) went to New Town in Hobart, and Draw 560 in October 2026 went to Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula.

Our favourite finds

Lightning strikes Marsden twice

Mater's Draw 314 in August 2024 was won by someone from Marsden, south of Brisbane. Draw 327 in October 2026 went to Marsden again. Same suburb, two prize homes, a bit over two years apart.

Victoria's back-to-back

Dream Home Art Union's Draws 432 and 433 went to Geelong and Greater Melbourne, one after the other. A $15.5 million package and then a $14.4 million one, both heading south.

Wurtulla, both ways

Endeavour's Draw 463 was won by a ticket holder from Wurtulla on the Sunshine Coast. A year later, Mater's Draw 327 prize home was in Wurtulla.

Technically New South Wales

Yourtown's Draw 553 went to Tweed Heads West, which counts as NSW even though it's a short drive from the Gold Coast. Border suburbs are a scorekeeper's nightmare.

Three homes, three states, one Queenslander

Dream Home Art Union's Draw 431 offered homes on the Gold Coast, in Potts Point in Sydney and at Mount Martha in Victoria. It was won by a ticket holder from Central Queensland.

Darwin, it's your turn

The Northern Territory is the only state or territory with no winner in our 60 draws. With only about 1% of Australians living there, that's no surprise, but someone has to be first.
